Meta winds down support for NFTs on Instagram and Facebook Looks like Meta is NGMI, as some might put it. Meta’s head of commerce and financial technologies Stephane Kasriel posted on Twitter that the company will sunset its NFT and digital collectibles features on Instagram and Facebook. This short-lived product only began testing with select Instagram creators last May, plus some Facebook users in June. By July, Meta expanded NFT support on Instagram for creators in 100 countries. Less than a year later, Meta is moving on from NFTs. Some product news: across the company, we're looking closely at what we prioritize to increase our focus. We’re winding down digital collectibles (NFTs) for now to focus on other ways to support creators, people, and businesses. What Spending 12 Billion Hours Per Day On Social Media Has Taught Us

Un 35-year-old man sits in a dark room, using his smartphone. getty Evidently, we all have much to share. Over the last 10 years or so, more and more social media users have grabbed their digital blow-horns and announced what they don’t like about their current flight, the sushi place near their home, and the person speaking during a political debate. (By the way, it’s almost always what we don’t like We all naturally have the tendency to feel negative. The result is that we’re now spending over 12 Billion hours On social media per day All over the globe. This stat was in a book I just finished called STFU: A Powerful Way to Maintain Your Silence in a Noisey World By Dan Lyons. Although the book claims that 10 billion hours are spent on social media per day, I found out from Dan Lyons that the data actually exceeds 12 billion hours. That’s the equivalent to 1.4 million years. Perhaps this is a great time to inquire why. Lyons says it’s because we are all too talkative, a...

UK closes ‘Jedi Blue’ antitrust collusion case against Google and Meta The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) won’t be pursuing an anticompetition collusion case against Google and Facebook’s parent Meta, following a similar decision made by its counterparts in the Europe Union. However, Google will remain under the CMA’s spotlight, with parts of the Google-Meta case now being bundled with a separate ongoing antitrust against Google. Jedi Blue The case in question relates to online display advertising, focusing on an alleged agreement between Google and Facebook dating back to 2018, dubbed “ Jedi Blue .” The deal reportedly meant that Google would give Facebook preferential treatment in terms of ad rates, placements and access to data, in exchange for Facebook distancing itself from an alternative programmatic advertising system called header bidding, which would have cut into Google’s coffers. Both companies denied any wrongdoing, saying that there was no exclusivity ...

Elon Musk Apologizes After Publicly Mocking Disabled Twitter Employee

The billionaire also asked for accommodations for him, which was rare in the face of the ongoing chaos and uncertainty at Twitter. An ex-Twitter employee received an apology from Elon Musk. AFP via Getty Images Here are some key facts Musk apologized to former Twitter employee Haraldur “Halli” Thorleifsson after the two shared a bitter exchange on the platform a day earlier. Musk, who publicly criticized Thorleifsson’s work and his need for disability accommodations, said the comments arose from a “misunderstanding of his situation.” This stemmed from Musk being told things that were “untrue” or were “true, but not meaningful,” he said. Facebook’s latest test brings back in-app messaging

Image
Facebook’s latest test brings back in-app messaging Facebook head Tom Alison announced today that the company is testing the ability for users to access their Messenger inbox within the Facebook app. Back in 2016, Facebook removed messaging capabilities from its mobile web application to push people to the Messenger app, in a move that angered many users. Now, the company is testing a reversal of this decision. In a blog post , Alison said the social network is currently testing this change, and noted that Facebook plans to expand the test soon. The change comes as Facebook, and other Meta-owned platforms, are looking to compete with TikTok. “Over the coming year, we’ll build more ways to integrate messaging features in Facebook,” Alison said in the blog post. “Ultimately, we want it to be easy and convenient for people to connect and share, whether in the Messenger app or directly within Facebook.” Over the past year, Facebook has been moving away from focusing on being an app fo...

Twitter’s Website Was Down With API Access Errors In The Longest Outage Of Elon Musk Era

Update 9;48 Twitter’s services appear to be restored Twitter’s website was down for about an hour this morning. Attempting to access the home page of Twitter.com returned an error suggesting that “your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint.” The Twitter app, however, appeared to be mostly functioning, though with some errors: all links failed, with the same error message. The outage-tracking website downforeveryoneorjustme says the problems began before 9AM Pacific this morning. Twitter has gone down with an error message indicating that the issue is API access. John Koetsier Twitter recently closed API access for multiple companies using it to send and read tweets. It’s unclear at this point if the current problem is related. Twitter also cut 10% of its workforce, possibly related to Esther Crawford (prominent product leader), who famously supported the many Elon Musk changes. Twitter’s service has been surprisingly robust as the company has cut thousands...

Will Twitter User Engagement Take a Dive in 2023?

Image
Ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter in October, it’s been clear he can generate controversy and attract news coverage. However, it remains to be seen whether he can actually turn around the platform from a business perspective.  Unfortunately, most of the headlines have not reflected well on his leadership. There have been a series of gaffes such as poorly communicated mass layoffs, the pay-to-play blue tick debacle , reports of advertisers dropping like flies, and Musk’s own followers voting for him to step down as CEO.  If he was anyone other than the former world’s richest man, it would be fair to wonder whether Musk might be forced to step down rather than have a choice. Having declared he’ll honor the public vote on his leadership, but only when he finds a successor, there’s been no news regarding the matter since he made the announcement in December. The truth is that the problems at Twitter began before Elon Musk took over, and this is reflected in the ...

Social Media Services Look To Put The Squeeze On Users Via ‘Premium Features’

Social media platforms have begun to offer subscriptions after years of being “free” for many. … [+] Add-ons include verified accounts, access to higher security and more. getty Social media sites are now offering subscriptions to their services, which include verified accounts and greater security. This comes after years of being “free” for many. The moves are the latest effort by social media companies – including Facebook and Twitter – to monetize their massive user bases. Twitter launched a paid subscription for its users in June 2021. But, Elon Musk, who took over the company, expanded the service by offering additional features, such as the blue verification marks and priority in replies. Facebook parent Meta also followed the lead with “Meta Verified,” which was launched to pilot users in Australia, New Zealand and New Zealand last month. Revenue streams The social media websites are now under more pressure to create new revenue s...

TikTok Earned $205 Million More Than Facebook, Twitter, Snap And Instagram Combined On In-App Purchases In 2023

TikTok is leading the charge for social networks to double down on their in-app payment rates. Apptopia Big social networks are pulling a massive revenue U-turn since Apple’s introduction of App Tracking Transparency. In 2020, the user privacy feature was announced and it will be implemented in 2021. It limits what data Facebook, TikTok and Snap can use for targeting ads. Big social networks are now pushing to make direct payments to users as an alternative to ad focused monetization. “Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and Snapchat are still without paywalls but they now all offer products/services for charge via an in-app purchase (IAP), which Apple and Google get a cut of,” says Adam Blacker, a vice-president at mobile metrics company Apptopia. “TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter combined have grown quarterly IAP revenue 91% since Apple introduced ATT.” Before iOS 14.5, which introduced Apple’s privacy protections, big social networks made almost all of their mo...

Elon Musk Crypto Scams Promise Free Neuralink Brain Chip In Paid Ads On Twitter

An online website that claims Elon Musk started a Neuralink-themed business. It was set up by cryptocurrency scammers … [+] coin. Twitter Twitter has been swamped in recent years with crypto scammers using Elon Musk’s image to swindle unsuspecting investors. These fraudsters used Twitter accounts that were free to conduct their scams. But over the past week, I’ve noticed a new tactic the scammers are using on Twitter: They’re buying paid ads. And they’re even promising that big spenders could win a trip to Mars or even a Neuralink brain chip, all thanks to Elon Musk. I first noticed a paid ad for crypto using the Twitter CEO’s photo late last week, but assumed it was an anomaly. Surely, I thought, Twitter must have processes for making sure scam artists aren’t using the social media platform to buy ads, especially when they’re using the current owner’s photo and fake tweets in just a nakedly deceptive way. But then I noticed another crypto scam using Musk’s photo on Monday...

One quick look at her profile This digitally created humanoid shows all the characteristics of a robot. The shadows are not quite right, the flecks in her eyes are too perfect, and there’s a slightly cartoonish look. It is impressive that anyone took the time and created a visual representation for a chatbot. Lia introduces herself and describes her goals in a short video. You can talk with Lia on the Lia homepage and ask any questions. She makes clear on her Twitter that she is a fake person. It was on Lia’s feed By accident. A bot had retweeted a post.
