These ads encourage users to download apps that allow them to pay for chapters. One ad, teasing a story about a “night of terror” where a teen girl will be “mated” to a “creature,” featured a shirtless photo of Brazilian football star Neymar mashed up with a stock image of a beaten woman. Neymar’s representative said SME This image was taken without permission. It was an ad for iReader. In 2...

You know what’s good for business?

Image
It’s good for your business… When you make short-term decisions that are consistent with your long-term plans. When you hire amazing people and pay them what they’re worth. When you build a reputation as a trusted source of value. When you connect with the right kind of people . When you feed your mind with rich mental protein and take care of your body. When you pause to reflect before saying, publishing or sending anything important. When you start each morning thinking about the things you’re grateful for. When you start your working day, writing a list of things you want to achieve. And close each day, with a review of the things you’ve learned. When you build your primary marketing channel on a platform you control. Your website. Your email list. Social media platforms can, and do, wipe out businesses by deleting their accounts. When you treat different clients differently, according to their unique needs. ...

The Day Russian Hackers Took Over My Twitter Account

Mobile phone hacker stealing data getty It’s still a shock to me that Russian hackers took control of my Twitter account. That was back in 2014. I was wrapping up assignments. To keep up with the news, and to see who is responding to my tweets, I often head to Twitter. I don’t often expect to see much activity, but I enjoy connecting with those who do have questions or comments. That day I was stunned to find a string of responses. “You’ve been hacked,” said one follower. “Did you just learn Russian recently?” joked another. Several thought I was swindling them. Some people claimed that they wanted to stop following me. It didn’t sound right. I went over to the login screen. There, I entered my email address and password. Nothing. I tried again thinking that I had typed it wrong. My account was locked by this. The panic started to set in. My routine social media check turned out to be a little nightmare. At the time, it didn’t Feel minor. The hackers had compro...

Video Of Russian Tanks Circulates On Social Media

On August 21st 2008, a Russian T62 tank crossed the highway connecting Tbilisi to western Georgia. … [+] At a Russian-manned checkpoint. Russia does not intend to “slam” NATO but NATO must chose partnership with Moscow rather than support Georgia, Sergei Lavrov stated today. AFP PHOTO / MARCO LONGARI. The Kremlin continues to rely on outdated or obsolete military hardware. The Cold War-era tanks, which have been removed from storage and reported to be being moved to the frontlines are most notable. A video showing 60-year old T-62 tanks stacked up in Russia on railroad cars was circulated online over the weekend. Russia took out the Soviet tanks from conservation – without any protection against modern weaponry. We’ve seen the conditions they live in. “Perfect combination, doomed...

The easiest way for new clients to find you

Image
Image: Mitchell Luo Here’s what we know for certain: There’s a huge difference between someone using a search engine to find your business by its name , and someone merely searching for a provider in your industry. If they’re searching for your business by its name , they’ll find you. If they’re searching for a provider , they will find countless pages of results. Even if they do manage to find the result for your business, unless you’re at the top of the results, or very close, the chances of them clicking through to your site is tiny. Because you’ll simply be competing with everyone else. You could try to buy your way to the top of the search results, but it’s expensive, risky and all the risk is on you. Thankfully, there is a far better alternative. Searching for you by name Here’s a vastly more effective marketing strategy. It’s the strategy I use myself, and it works in every economy! You ...

Social Media Accounts Aren’t The Only Platforms That Can Be Hacked

Image
Hacking is something that has become all too common with the internet being as integral to our lives as it is today. While many people fear hackers gaining access to their social media, bank, or loan accounts, there are even bigger and more dangerous possibilities.  Cyber attacks have risen dramatically over time. In 2015, suspects Russian hackers knocked out electricity for nearly 250,000 customers in Ukraine, with a similar attack toward Ukraine government occuring the next year. With the connection between cyber and physical assets growing, there is a growing risk to both network and physical infrastructure. Adding to the threat of cyber attacks is the amount of remote workers since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. When employees work remotely, they are using less-secure home networks and personal devices that are not as protected against cyber threats. More information was moved to the cloud during this time that could be targeted in a potential cyber attack. These ...

Business Stereotypes

Business Stereotypes The “Business Stereotype” is a phenomenon that arises in organizations. It is an idea or concept about how people want to perceive their peers, but it is not truly accurate. Even though business stereotypes may be posited as truths, they are false and often distorting. Dr. Jordan Sudberg , “The purpose of the business stereotype is to keep the status quo while maintaining an image of control in an increasingly chaotic world.” Common Business Stereotypes 1. The workaholic A workaholic is someone who never stops working. These individuals do not take vacations and rarely take breaks. They continue to maintain a grueling schedule that encompasses their personal and professional lives. A true workaholic has no separation between the two, as their life is their job. As previously mentioned, this stereotype is often untrue for even the hardest workers in a business setting. It is because family time and time with friends are essenti...

Let’s look at closing the sale

Image
When I started out in sales and marketing, it was all about closing the sale . In fact, good salespeople were often referred to as good closers . Decades later, I still see sales recruiters asking for candidates who have a proven record of closing . Here’s why we need to be extremely careful before adopting the closing mindset, or any of the countless closing tricks and techniques. Closing for business? The challenge with the closing mindset , is that it positions the prospective customer as little more than a barrier. A hurdle between you and the sale. An obstacle to be overcome. Little wonder so many closing techniques are based on psychological tricks. The use of long, uncomfortable silences at key points in the sales process, for example, is used to put pressure on the prospective client. So is refusing to accept a “no” from them, by asking what they need additional information on, when they clearly just want the salesperson to go away. ...

Maintaining Your Social Life While Working: Self Sovereign Employees

Image
With the development of new technology, many workers are changing the way they view their employment. While traditional 9-5 workdays in the office used to be the norm for almost anyone, today more people are looking for independent, remote positions that give them more freedom over the rest of their lives.  Today, 71% of Americans report that they would rather be self employed. Independent workers make more money on average, they have more say over their hours, and are able to work from almost everywhere due to the growing popularity of remote work. Web3 technologies have made this goal even more achievable for workers as new technologies are emerging each day that create jobs as well as make new opportunities for existing jobs. Web3 is the new evolution of the internet that not only creates millions of jobs with its own development and maintenance projects, but makes technology like the metaverse more accessible for people to use in their own job efforts. Aside from the i...

From Camping To Cheese Pizza, ‘Algospeak’ Is Taking Over Social Media

Americans are increasingly using code words known as “algospeak” to evade detection by content moderation technology, especially when posting about things that are controversial or may break platform rules. I f you’ve seen people posting about “camping” on social media, there’s a chance they’re not talking about how to pitch a tent or which National Parks to visit. The term recently became “algospeak” for something entirely different: discussing abortion-related issues in the wake of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. Social media users are increasingly using codewords, emojis and deliberate typos—so-called “algospeak”—to avoid detection by apps’ moderation AI when posting content that is sensitive or might break their rules. Siobhan Hanna, who oversees AI data solutions for Telus International, a Canadian company that has provided human and AI content moderation services to nearly every major social media platform including TikTok, said “camping” is just one phrase t...

Enthusiasm is marketing gold dust

Image
Today, I’d like you to consider your answer to the following question. How enthusiastic are you about your business? Here’s why your answer to that question is so important: People can tell almost immediately if you’re enthusiastic or not. And that matters! It matters because is has an immediate impact on how they feel about you, your business and the service you provide. Allow me to explain. Enthusiasm makes things happen When you speak (or write) with enthusiasm, people feel more positively about you. Enthusiastic business owners exude confidence , which is essential. Think about it, we only hire people or buy from them, if we have confidence in them. Someone once told me that their definition of making a sale was: ‘ The transfer of enthusiasm ‘. That’s a great example of just how essential enthusiasm is to the success of your business. And when you speak with enthusiasm, people listen more attentively, too. They...

How To Combat the Effects of Inflation

Image
In 2022, inflation rose 9.1%. This is the fastest pace of inflation the country has seen since 1981 with the index of all goods rising dramatically.  In 2021 the US depreciated 16% compared to the Mexican peso, 12% compared to the Canadian Dollar, and 9% compared to the Euro. These trends are not expected to stop anytime soon either. Runaway inflation rates suggest that $1 in 2020 will equal just $.65 in 2030. It is clear that paper money is depreciating in value, but this is not the first time the country has experienced this. In the 2008-2012 recession, investors started pouring more of their money into gold which led to the value of it increasing. Investors now are doing the same thing, and gold now holds a higher investment rate than the stock market.  Gold’s investment return rate was nearly 25% in 2020. With this high incentive for investors along with the lower risk gold carries compared to internet currency or paper money, more investors are beginning to chang...

Social Media Now Used To Vet Gun Applicants In New York State

New law now requires that applicants provide a complete list of former and current addresses to local authorities. … [+] The following social media accounts were created in the last three years. getty Starting this month, concealed gun owners will need to give details of their social media accounts. These will be checked for character and conduct. This new law, recently in effect in New York City, is part of an August law that tried to keep some firearms limits in place after the Supreme Court ruled that all citizens are entitled to personal protection. Kathy Hochul, the Governor of New York signed the bill into Law in July. She noted at that time that mass shooters had “telegraphed their intention to harm others online”. The new law requires applicants to give local officials a list with current and past social media accounts for the last three years. Local sheriffs, judges and country clerks can then go through the profiles to see if any applicants make statem...
